The Days of Noah … A World of Gigantic Wickedness!

“When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves … The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men … When the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time, the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and he was deeply grieved … Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness.” (Genesis 6:1-2,4-6,11)
Of the 500+ podcasts that I’ve posted to YouTube, by far the most clicked on and listened to are the few about the Genesis 6 giants, the Nephilim.
People just love the sensational and weird stuff, don’t they?
That said, yes, I believe these giants really did exist. The Bible even says they existed after the Flood: “The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward” (Genesis 6:4). The Bible tells us they inhabited Canaan during Israel’s conquest (Numbers 13:22, 28, 33; Deuteronomy 2). Because Joshua and the Israelites were so successful in taking Canaan, the remaining giants found refuge (and fearful respect) in Philistine territory (Joshua 11:21-22).
That’s the end of the giants, right? No siree! According to those who have really dug deep into historical records (Tom Horn, Steve Quayle, et al.), giants have existed since the Flood and continue to exist to this day. According to one questionable account, a giant was supposedly killed by special forces in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2002.
I’m not here to argue for or against the existence of giants, although I’m a firm believer that they did (and quite possibly still do). I want to look at the Days of Noah from a different perspective, a giant viewpoint, and extrapolate how the giants so influenced global society in Noah’s days that their activities caused God to level His judgment against a sin-stained world. For this, we draw on the Bible and other books to which it refers, such as the Book of Enoch.
Who were the giants and where did they come from?
Genesis 6 and 1 Enoch fill in the blanks. Two hundred spiritual beings, called the Sons of God (Bible)/the Watchers (Enoch), decided they wanted to try what humanity enjoyed – family life. This rebel group was led by Semjâzâ (the overall leader) and Azâzêl (one of the chiefs; later singled out for special blame). “In the Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 6–16), the 200 fallen angels known as the Watchers—led primarily by Semjâzâ (Shemihazah) and Azâzêl (Azazel)—swore a mutual oath on Mount Hermon, descended to earth, took human wives, and fathered the giant Nephilim” (sacred-texts.com, Book of Enoch).
There you have it. The Nephilim (Heb. the “fallen ones”) are the giants of yore. But the record of their existence isn’t limited to the Bible or Jewish apocalyptic literature. We find very similar accounts in ancient Mesopotamian, Sumerian, Greek, and Roman stories. The Watchers bear a remarkable resemblance to the Greek gods, particularly Zeus, who liked to philander with young maidens and often spawned supernatural/human hybrid offspring with uncanny powers. Hercules, for example, was known for his strength. The ancient “hero,” king Gilgamesh of Uruk, Mesopotamia, was reputed to be a vile, filthy god-man, whose deeds repulsed and terrified his people.
So, a band of unholy spiritual beings descended to earth, took human women for wives, and conceived horrific offspring, children of rebellion, that began to roam the earth.
What did these Nephilim giants do?
They were beings of voracious appetites. Sacred-texts.com notes: “The giants were of monstrous size— ‘whose height was three thousand ells’ (an immense, hyperbolic stature far beyond normal humans). Their behavior was predatory, gluttonous, and cannibalistic:
They first ‘consumed all the acquisitions of men’ (i.e., devoured all the produce and labor of humanity), leading to famine-like conditions where ‘men could no longer sustain them.’
When resources ran out, ‘the giants turned against them and devoured mankind.’
They ‘began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish’ (devouring them indiscriminately), and ‘to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood.’
This created a cycle of mutual destruction among the giants themselves, alongside their attacks on humans and the natural world” (https://sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe010.htm). “They are portrayed as lawless oppressors whose violence filled the earth with blood.”
Of course, the giants were lawless oppressors whose violence filled the earth with blood! They were created out of rebellion to God, and their existence violated the core of the Lord’s design for all creation, spiritual and natural.
How did the Nephilim giants affect the world?
“The world under their dominance (prior to the Flood judgment) was one of extreme violence, resource depletion, lawlessness, and widespread bloodshed. The earth itself is described as crying out in accusation, filled with blood and unrighteousness, while the souls of the slain humans lamented ceaselessly to heaven because of the ‘lawless deeds’ being wrought everywhere. Humanity was overwhelmed, unable to sustain itself, and corrupted not only by the giants’ direct actions but also by the forbidden knowledge their angelic fathers had taught”
How did the Nephilim giants affect humanity?
“Humanity suffered catastrophic oppression and near-destruction:
People were literally devoured by the giants after their crops and resources were exhausted.
Widespread death led to ‘much blood being shed upon the earth’ and ‘all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth.’ The ‘whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness.’
The souls of the dead ‘are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven,’ with their ‘lamentations’ ascending without cease due to the ongoing violence.
The earth itself ‘made without inhabitant cries the voice of their crying up to the gates of heaven’ and ‘laid accusation against the lawless ones’” (https://sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe012.htm).
Not only were the giants wreaking havoc on the earth, but humanity was swept up in the violence and perversion. “When the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time … Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness. God saw how corrupt the earth was, for every creature had corrupted its way on the earth” (Genesis 6: 5, 11-12).
Utter. Pandemonium.
How did God deal with the near-total corruption of His creation, and what became of the Nephimi/giants?
The Lord wiped out humanity that was corrupt and beyond saving, along with the Nephilim. Only Noah and his family were spared, for “Noah was a righteous man (aligned with God morally), blameless (sound, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity, uncorrupted) among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.”
Now, contrast Noah’s walk with God with the conditions of his day. “1 Enoch depicts the era of the Nephilim/giants as a pre-Flood hellscape of cannibalism, ecological ruin, human slaughter, and cosmic outcry that prompted the archangels (Michael, Uriel, Raphael, Gabriel) to petition God for judgment—ultimately leading to the binding of the Watchers and the Flood to cleanse the earth. The giants’ own spirits later become demonic forces that continue to afflict humanity (see ch. 15), but the living Nephilim period itself is defined by their direct, voracious tyranny (https://sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe018.htm, italics author).” This expands on the brief Genesis 6:1–4 account with vivid apocalyptic detail.
Did you catch the mind-blowing part about the Nephilims’ condition after the Flood? The above quote says that though the giants’ bodies died in the Flood, their spirits lived on and are the demons that currently assault humanity.
1 Enoch gives us insight about what happened to the Nephilim post-Flood, and why. “8And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. 9Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, ⌈⌈and⌉⌉ from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; ⌈they shall be evil spirits on earth, and⌉ evil spirits shall they be called. [10As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.]” (1 Enoch 15:8-10).
No wonder demonic forces, as revealed in the Bible, are always in search of physical bodies to inhabit because their dry, disembodied state is unbearable.
Jesus’ words now make even more sense. “When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest, and not finding rest, it then says, ‘I’ll go back to my house (a human body) that I came from.’ Returning, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first” (Luke 11:24-26).
A physical body is comprised mostly of water. It appears that a demon’s disembodied state is agonizingly dry in an arid, spiritual realm. Therefore, the evil spirit yearns to return to a more suitable container, one that, water-wise and human-wise, more closely approximates its former physical body.
To me, this explains why, when Jesus cast the demons out of the demon-infested man of Gadara, the demons pleaded with Jesus to let them inhabit nearby pigs. “A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged him to permit them to enter the pigs, and he gave them permission. The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned” (Luke 8:32-33).
Hey, a pig’s body was better than nothing, right? But then the pigs died by drowning (how ironic), and the evil spirits still suffered their hoped-to-avoid fate.
So, what is the current state of the world where the evil spirits of the former Nephilim giants still roam? “11And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, ⌈but nevertheless hunger⌉ and thirst, and cause offenses. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded ⌈from them⌉” (1 Enoch 1511).
That’s right. The spiritual battle between humanity and evil spirits began with the Watchers and will end when Jesus returns.
Until then, Jesus has given us authority and power to battle these demonic forces, viz., forcing them out and away from their human victims through deliverance ministry, and neutralizing their activities among humanity through prayer.
“As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be” (Matthew 24:37).
I believe the main point of Jesus’ warning is that His return will be sudden, and those who are wrapped up in the affairs of life will be taken by surprise. However, given the Days of Noah template and the continued presence of the Nephilim giants as evil spirits, I wouldn’t be surprised to see our global society collapse into a maelstrom of bloody, vicious, rabid wickedness before Jesus comes. As Noah resisted the utter corruption, violence, and perversion of his day, would we be surprised to see societies around the world embrace and manifest the most wicked, perverted, violent, anti-God corruption since Noah’s day?
How many people, even today, have welcomed demons into their lives through wanton sin and spiritual rebellion? How many have already given themselves over to depravity because they willingly cooperate with the demons that they have given safe harbor to within their water-based bodies?
We don’t have to guess.
Look around.
Reports are emerging from the Epstein files and other sources (the dark web and personal accounts) of all ages and varieties of sexual abuse and torture, even human sacrifice. Reports of cannibalism are surfacing among these same perpetrators. We’re reading about the most extreme forms of violence perpetrated upon the innocent. As in the 60s, when rebellion against God rose to front-page daily news, violent protests are exploding simply because some people didn’t like a political situation that doesn’t warrant social upheaval.
I believe that we will see conditions grow worse and worse as we draw near to the End because “as it was in the Days of Noah,” spiritual forces will mix with humanity, figuratively (through influence) and literally (through welcomed possession). I think we’ll see “extreme violence, resource depletion, lawlessness, and widespread bloodshed.”
Don’t be afraid, saint of God and warrior of the Great King. The God of the Universe’s authority and power are with you, as Jesus promised, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).
As Martin Luther put it in his hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,
(vs. 3) And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God has willed
His truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
for lo! His doom is sure;
One little word shall fell him.
The Days of Noah will give way to the Day of the Lord!
